THE BOYS
The Boys Part 2
the second part of the day took us via borrowed vintage pickup truck to the farm, and I love this part.
I grew up on a hard working farm, it will always be close to my heart as a Farmers son, a certain sense of nostalgia and belonging fills me whenever I’m near one, its in my blood.
Later realising 2 of the guys had never ridden a horse before, this was a special moment to capture, again such visceral emotions, fleeting moments, the brave face we all have for moments like this, city slickers way out of their comfort zone, an unforgettable memory.
None were experts at sheep herding though! But the sheep were happy for the distraction….Planning allows spontaneity to thrive, keeping it all original and unique.
Collaborating with DOP Gerrit Olivier, understanding each others process, our complete lack of ego, at times assisting each other, creates intimacy, a symbiosis in our image language, allowing my direction to thrive. Tearing around in a pickup truck taking turns to film and shoot and drive was the ultimate expression of that sentiment!
Great to later have Matthew Goodeve on board for his editing insight in creating the final story.
Thanks to gentleman farmer Julian Melck for having us at the wonderfully isolated Kersefontein, sadly we weren’t able to indulge in his legendary hospitality on this occasion, such an inspiring space for creative thinking.
Thanks Byron, Head of Mens division, @boysofboss Cape Town, for casting this so astutely, and Emma Buckland for additional inspiration.
The best results always come with the right team and open collaboration.
